Dr. Melody Herman is the Director of Regional Anesthesiology at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina - the region’s only level 1 trauma hospital. She completed her anesthesiology residency at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital and regional anesthesiology and acute pain fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Herman's passion for regional anesthesia in trauma patients is fueled by the creativity and multitude of approaches to achieve effective analgesia. Many patients with acute trauma have multiple sites of injury that would benefit from regional anesthesia, complex medical histories, and limited mobility. This requires a solid understanding of anatomy and thinking outside of the box to deliver high quality regional anesthesia.
Dr. Herman has also formed an interdepartmental collaboration the Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Fellowship Program. In this collaboration, emergency medicine physicians with specialty training in ultrasound teach anesthesiologists point of care ultrasound, while regional anesthesiologists reciprocate by educating emergency medicine physicians on essential blocks for common acute pain conditions encountered in the emergency room.
Dr. Herman contributes as faculty at the American Society of Regional Anesthesia (ASRA), European Society of Regional Anaesthesia (ESRA), and American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) annual conferences. She is the current Chair of the ASRA Private Practice Special Interest Group and serves as the United States representative for the ESRA International Committee. Beyond her professional pursuits, Dr. Herman finds joy in creating educational and entertaining content on TikTok and Twitter and cherishes moments camping in the mountains with her two children.
