Professional career
Graduated cum laude in Medicine in Roma (Italy) in 1973. He started his academic career, in the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care of the same University. Four years later he moved to the University of L’Aquila (Italy). In 1985 he became Chairman of the Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine Department. In that University he has started and directed all the Academic Anesthesia and Pain Medicine programs, including the residency program. At the moment, he is President of the Paolo Procacci Foundation, NGO based in Roma and involved in research and education on Pain Medicine.

Other professional activities
As a member of the scientific community, he has published few hundred papers and chapters of books, and edited several books. At the moment, he is Editor in Chief of Pain and Therapy (2020 IF 5.725), Signa Vitae (2020 IF 0.63), and Clinics and Practice. He is also in the Editorial Board of several other journals of the specialties.
Since 1974 he is involved, at different levels, in the scientific societies of Anesthesiology and of Pain, both at national and international level. In 1993 he was one of the Founding Members of the European Pain Federation (EFIC), where he served as Member of the Executive Board for 21 years, also as President (2008-2011), and Liaison Officer with the European Community Institutions (2014-2017). In 2017-2020 he has served in the Executive Board of the World Institute of Pain (WIP) as President-Elect and President.
During his professional life, he has organized several national and international congresses, including the first European Congress of Pain medicine (EFIC Congress 1995, Verona), the World Society of Pain Clinicians Congress (2000, Santa Margherita di Pula), the EFIC Congress in Florence (2012) and the Congress of WIP (2020, Roma). At the moment, he is responsible for the organization of Roma Pain Days, as President of the Paolo Procacci Foundation.

Main scientific interests
At the beginning of his professional life, his research interest was mainly addressed to Obstetric Anesthesia and Analgesia. Starting from the beginning of the nineties he was mainly attracted by research on Pain Medicine, especially on inflammatory pain. He has also developed an important interest on the societal impact of pain (SIP), at any level. On this last topic in 2010 he has strongly contributed to creating a European annual event of awareness, initially organized inside of the European Parliament.
