Gwen is originally from Johannesburg, where she completed her undergraduate medical degree at the Wits University. She spent 2007 with the Centre for Aviation, Space and Extreme Environment Medicine (CASE) at University College London, working as a research assistant on the Caudwell Xtreme Everest project, doing data collection at Everest Base Camp and then data analysis in London before returning to South Africa to commence her Specialist Anaesthesiology training. After completing her specialisation at Wits, she set up an anaesthetic training program in a very rural district of South Africa before entering private practice in George.
Gwen has special interests in Regional Anaesthesia, ethics and the environment. She is the current Chair of the South African Society of Regional Anaesthesiology (SASRA) and is completing her MSc in Regional Anaesthesia at the University of East Anglia, for which she is comparing the carbon footprints of general vs regional anaesthesia.
Gwen is an ultra-trail runner, vocal performer and mother of two daughters.
